Welcome to our classroom!

Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome you and your child to my fifth grade classroom. I am very happy to begin another exciting year at Brier Creek and I look forward to getting to know you and your child as we work together throughout the year.

Here are a few points of interest for you about your childs classroom and how we will be doing things in third grade.

  • Lunch Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.11:25 - 11:50 a.m.  On Wednesday, lunch will be from 11:15 - 11:40 a.m.

  • Homework:

Reading- Your child will be asked to read for a period of time each evening. The goal for every child in our classroom is to read as much as possible this year.   Your child will need to complete three (3) activities per week from their Reading Homework Choice Board.  These activities will need to be turned in each Friday morning.

REMEMBER: Homework is not meant to be a test of parent skills, but a reinforcement tool for facts learned in the classroom.

  • Behavior Plan

School wide we are implementing the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) which is an approach to proactive, school-wide behavior based on a Response to Intervention (RtI) model. PBIS applies evidence-based programs, practices and strategies for all students to increase academic performance, improve safety, decrease problem behavior, and establish a positive school culture.

As a class, I will utilize Class Dojo to track student behavior in the classroom.  Points earned will be used bi-monthly to "purchase" rewards that can be used in the classroom.

I look forward to a great school year and will work hard to meet your childs individual needs in fifth grade. Remember you can email me at kelligilchrist@davidson.k12.nc.us or call after the regular school day if you have questions about anything that concerns you and your child.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Gilchrist (Mrs. G)
